Section 80D Medical Insurance FAQs

Essential facts on claiming medical insurance and check-up tax relief.

Can I claim Section 80D deductions if I pay health insurance premiums in cash?

No. To claim deductions under Section 80D, health insurance premiums must be paid via non-cash banking modes (netbanking, UPI, debit/credit cards, or cheque). Only preventive health check-up expenses (up to ₹5,000) are permitted to be paid in cash.

Can I claim medical treatment expenses for senior citizen parents without health insurance?

Yes. Under Section 80D, if your senior citizen parents (aged 60 or above) do not have active health insurance coverage, you can claim actual medical expenditures (consultations, prescription medicines, hospital treatments) up to ₹50,000 per financial year.

Is the ₹5,000 preventive health check-up deduction separate from the ₹25,000/₹50,000 limits?

No. The ₹5,000 preventive check-up benefit is an internal sub-limit within the overall ₹25,000 (or ₹50,000) ceiling, not an extra allowance over and above the primary limits.
