The National Pension System (NPS) Architecture: Market Returns Meets Lifetime Pension
Regulated by PFRDA, the National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, defined-contribution retirement vehicle featuring the lowest fund management charges globally (under 0.09%). Capital is allocated across equities (Asset E), corporate debt (Asset C), and government bonds (Asset G).
Maturity Structure at Age 60
Upon reaching age 60: you can withdraw up to 60% of the accumulated corpus completely tax-free as a lump sum. The remaining 40% must be deployed into an annuity plan to generate lifelong monthly pension income.
Triple Tax Benefits
Deduct up to ₹1.5L under 80CCD(1), an exclusive ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B), plus employer contributions under Section 80CCD(2) up to 14% of salary (tax-free under both regimes).
National Pension System (NPS) FAQs
Clear statutory guidance on NPS Tier-1 and Tier-2 accounts.
What is the maximum equity exposure allowed in NPS Tier-1 accounts?
Under Active Choice, private sector subscribers can allocate up to 75% of their contributions into Equity (Asset Class E) up to age 50, after which equity exposure automatically tapers down by 2.5% per year.
Can I withdraw 100% of my NPS corpus if my total balance is small?
Yes. If your total accumulated NPS corpus at age 60 is ₹5 Lakhs or less, you are permitted to withdraw 100% of the corpus as a lump sum without purchasing a mandatory annuity.
Is monthly pension received from an annuity taxable?
Yes. While the 60% lump-sum withdrawal is 100% tax-free, the monthly pension annuity received from your chosen insurance company is taxable as regular income at your applicable slab rates.
