The Traditional Endowment Return Trap
Sum assured is only ₹10 Lakhs (terribly underinsured). Over 20 years, you pay ₹12 Lakhs in premiums. The policy returns 4.5% IRR, losing purchasing power against 6.5% real inflation.
Buy ₹1 Crore Pure Term Insurance for ₹8,500/year. Invest remaining ₹51,500/year into Nifty 50 SIP at 12.5% CAGR. You get 10x higher life cover and 2.2x more wealth!
1. Overcoming the "I Already Paid 5 Years" Sunk Cost Trap
The number one reason millions of Indians continue paying expensive traditional insurance premiums is the Sunk Cost Fallacy: the belief that surrendering a policy "loses" the money already paid.
Mathematically, the money you have already paid is gone. The only relevant decision is: What will generate higher terminal wealth for your FUTURE premium payments over the next 10–15 years?
| Strategy Path | Annual Outlay | Life Cover | 20-Year Terminal Wealth | Effective IRR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep Paying LIC Policy | ₹60,000 | ₹10 Lakhs (Grossly Inadequate) | ₹24,80,000 | 4.4% p.a. |
| Surrender & Reinvest in Term + SIP | ₹60,000 (₹9k Term + ₹51k SIP) | ₹1,00,00,000 (₹1 Crore) | ₹54,20,000 | 11.8% p.a. Net (+₹29.4L!) |
2. Understanding Guaranteed vs Special Surrender Value (SSV)
When you approach an insurance company to surrender, they compute two values and pay the higher one:
- Guaranteed Surrender Value (GSV): A statutory percentage of total premiums paid (excluding 1st year premium and GST). Scales from 30% after 2 years up to 90% in later years.
- Special Surrender Value (SSV): Computed based on Paid-Up Sum Assured plus accrued vested simple reversionary bonuses, discounted by an actuarial factor. SSV is almost always substantially higher than GSV.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is surrender value taxable in India?
If the annual premium was less than 10% of the sum assured, the surrender value is completely exempt under Section 10(10D). If premium exceeded 10% of sum assured (or if policy was taken after April 1, 2023 with aggregate premium > ₹5 Lakhs), the gain portion is subject to TDS at 5% under Section 194DA.
Should I make the policy "Paid-Up" instead of surrendering?
If you have only 2–3 years left until original maturity, making the policy "Paid-Up" (stop paying future premiums and let the proportional sum assured pay out at maturity) is usually mathematically superior to surrendering because you avoid the insurer's heavy surrender penalty charges.
